SEC Crypto Task Force Updates on Privacy, Surveillance Roundtable

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s Crypto Task Force has provided an update for a roundtable gathering scheduled for December 15th. The gathering will address financial surveillance and privacy.

SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce, leader of the Crypto Task Force, said new technologies provide an opportunity to “recalibrate” on financial surveillance and civil liberties such as privacy.

“I look forward to this chance for the SEC, other federal regulators, and the public to learn from the roundtable participants about how these new tools work.”

Privacy concerns are a huge issue as technology makes it easier to snoop on the populace. Blockchain specifically mostly posts public ledgers which anyone can review, albeit having additional technology helps in following funds and their beneficiaries. The whole debate swirling around central bank digital currencies was altered due to privacy concerns, and the US is heading toward regulated stablecoins instead of retail CBDCs – unlike in Europe.

And then there is the topic of zero-knowledge proofs and how information can be shared with certainty without revealing identity. In brief, this is a hot topic for crypto.

The Roundtable is scheduled for December 15th, from 1PM to 5PM ET. The event will be live-streamed on the SEC website. The agenda is republished below.
