Danish Minister “Outraged” by Polymarket Offerings

Polymarket, the largest prediction market in the world, valued at over $8 billion, has grown in a hyperbolic manner. Today, individuals may create or place bets on event-driven wagers on all sorts of outcomes. Many of the listings are mundane, like future US Federal Reserve decisions, sporting events, and elections.

Other options include names tied to the Epstein files, US military engagement in Venezuela, and whether or not President Donald Trump will acquire Greenland. These last events appear to be upsetting Denmark, as a recent report claims that policymakers may be looking at ways to limit Polymarkets’ access to the Danish nation.

According to BT.dk, Danish Tax Minister Ane Halsboe-Jørgensen is outraged by the platform’s offerings. To quote the minister:

“It’s crazy that you’re building a platform where you’re playing on other people’s misfortune in this way. On death and destruction and then doing it for cryptocurrency. It’s far removed from everything I’m against. It’s very worrying that you can play on, for example, the war in Ukraine.”

The report states that 376 million kroner (USD $58.2 million) has been bet on a ceasefire in Ukraine and 33 million kroner (USD $5.2 million) on Trump’s takeover of Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Halsboe-Jørgensen laments that Polymarket is enabling bets on “other people’s misfortune.”

Reportedly, she wants to see if she can get the platform shut down in Denmark.

“I am deeply outraged if Danes are sitting around and putting cryptocurrency into these bets, which are of national importance and which for others are their lives and homeland.”
