Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has shared his personal views on the evolving direction of the Ethereum Foundation (EF), portraying it as a transition toward a more compact and enduring structure. He described the organization as a somewhat “smaller ship,” signaling a seemingly intentional move away from broad ambitions in favor of concentrated efforts that prioritize long-term viability for the leading smart contract platform’s ecosystem.
Central to this shift is a commitment to conserving resources by reducing the volume of ETH sales from the foundation’s digital assets holdings.
With the EF controlling roughly 0.16% of the total ETH supply, this approach aims to extend its financial runway significantly.
Buterin emphasized that the foundation is opting for “longevity over breadth,” directing its limited capacity toward initiatives that are uniquely essential to Ethereum’s core strengths and unlikely to emerge from other ecosystem participants.
This perspective arrives amid a wave of departures from the EF. In recent months, several prominent researchers and developers have left the organization, reflecting a broader realignment.
Buterin noted that such exits, while involving talented individuals aligned with Ethereum’s goals, are a necessary part of the transition.
By stepping back from certain activities, the EF creates space for external funding and innovation to flourish elsewhere in the decentralized network.
As always, Buterin clarified that his comments represent an individual viewpoint rather than an official board mandate.
He highlighted the collaborative nature of the changes, with interim leadership playing a key role in implementation and the board expanding to include new voices.
His own influence within the EF continues to wane, consistent with his advocacy for distributed responsibility across the ecosystem.
At the core of the foundation’s refined mission is a strong emphasis on what Buterin terms “CROPS” principles: censorship and capture resistance, open source development, privacy, and security.
The EF will dedicate itself to advancing these attributes at both the protocol and user-access layers, while deprioritizing efforts better suited to other groups.
This includes pursuing ambitious technical goals such as provably bug-free systems through AI-assisted formal verification, proper consensus mechanisms that maintain safety under challenging conditions, and reduced dependence on intermediaries via proposals like FOCIL.
Buterin argued against chasing raw performance metrics at the expense of foundational qualities. He believes Ethereum’s true advantage lies in delivering impressive depth in decentralization, verifiability, and user sovereignty rather than competing solely on speed or scale.
These priorities align with Ethereum’s maturation beyond its initial development phases, completed around 2022, allowing the EF to evolve from a central coordinator into one specialized contributor among many.
The strategist expressed optimism that this more opinionated yet streamlined model will stabilize soon.
He views the EF as positioned to support complementary organizations, potentially providing initial backing to initiatives that extend Ethereum‘s impact.
Some of my perspective on where the @ethereumfndn is going.
First of all, this is only my own view. The board is not just me, and I have no extra special powers on the board that the other board members do not. @aerugoettinea is the one executing much of this transition. My…

This evolution addresses community concerns about proper alignment with Ethereum’s decentralized ethos, turning feedback into motivation for principled action.
As the broader Ethereum ecosystem continues to evolve in 2026, this strategic narrowing underscores a vision of resilience and meaningful contribution. By focusing more resources wisely and embracing a more supportive rather than dominant role, the foundation aims to strategically help secure Ethereum’s place as a vital tool for technological self-sovereignty in an increasingly complex digital environment.
