The White House has posted an Executive Order addressing artificial intelligence (AI) development. Signed by President Trump, the document declares that the United States continues to lead the world in AI.
The EO states that the US policy is to support AI innovation and security by working with the private sector to modernize government and the private sector.
Additionally, the EO notes that AI poses national security concerns that will require coordination among federal government agencies.
“As these capabilities evolve, my Administration will continue to work closely with industry to ensure that the best and most secure technology is deployed rapidly to confront any and all threats to our country. We will continue to lead an America First cybersecurity effort that enhances both our national security and our global AI dominance.”
A series of deadlines is outlined that impact various segments of the government, including the Department of War, the Department of Treasury, Homeland Security, the Department of Commerce, the National Security Agency, and more.
The mission is to craft a “voluntary” framework for AI developers to engage with the Federal government
The EO tempers prior proclamations by rolling back more stringent language.
The national security focus is important because adversaries are rapidly developing AI capable of undermining the US and its policy objectives. The collaboration and less restrictive approach should support greater innovation and a more collaborative relationship between the private and public sectors.
The AI EO contrasts with the European approach, which prioritizes safety through more restrictions, while the US seeks speed and sector dominance.
