Revolut Intensifies Compliance Efforts in Lithuania Following High Volume of Suspicious Activity ReportsĀ

Digital bank Revolut is taking decisive steps to strengthen its anti-fraud and compliance measures in Lithuania following revelations from local authorities about the outsized share of suspicious transaction alerts originating from its platform. The development highlights the challenges faced by fast-growing fintech firms in balancing rapid expansion with proper risk management in a highly regulated environment.

According to the head of Lithuania’s Financial Crime Investigation Service (FNTT), approximately 80 percent of all suspicious transaction reports received by the agency last year came from Revolut.

Out of roughly 100,000 total reports processed nationwide, around 80,000 were submitted by the neobank.

The vast majority involved potential fraud cases affecting individual customers rather than broader money laundering schemes.

FNTT Director Rolandas KiŔkis noted during a parliamentary committee session that Revolut has heavily automated its monitoring systems.

These advanced tools, powered by significant investments in technology and artificial intelligence, flag even minor risks and generate reports automatically.

While this proactive approach results in a high volume of alerts, KiÅ”kis described it as a positive indicator of the company’s commitment to mitigating threats.

Revolut, which operates its European banking license through its Lithuanian entity, serves around 750,000 local customers and tens of millions across the continent.

The company attributes the elevated report numbers to its massive user base—far larger than traditional Lithuanian banks—and its sophisticated real-time detection capabilities.

In a statement, Revolut emphasized that its AI-driven systems help block the majority of fraudulent attempts and contribute to stabilizing overall fraud trends in the country.

This latest spotlight on Revolut comes against a backdrop of prior regulatory scrutiny.

The Bank of Lithuania previously imposed fines on the firm for shortcomings in anti-money laundering controls, including a notable penalty in recent years.

Officials have acknowledged that while Revolut is a source of national pride as a major fintech success story headquartered in the country, it has faced ongoing challenges in compliance scaling.

In response, the company is reportedly ramping up internal reviews, enhancing customer verification processes, and collaborating closely with authorities.

Industry observers suggest this ā€œclean-upā€ phase reflects a broader maturation strategy as Revolut seeks to solidify its reputation and expand responsibly amid increasing regulatory expectations across the EU.

The situation underscores the dual nature of fintech innovation: while automated systems excel at detecting threats at scale, they can also strain oversight resources when report volumes surge.

For Lithuania, home to Revolut’s EU operations, striking the right balance between fostering innovation and maintaining financial integrity remains a key priority.

Analysts expect continued dialogue between the bank, FNTT, and the central bank to refine practices and ensure sustainable growth.

As digital banking continues to reshape finance, cases like this serve as important benchmarks for how neobanks navigate compliance in smaller markets while serving global audiences. Revolut’s actions in Lithuania could set precedents for similar institutions facing comparable pressures.
