Pebble Celebrates an Amazing Year

Pebble Celebrates an Amazing YearThe Pebble smart watch was born of Kickstarter to raise the most funds to date on the rewards based crowdfunding platform.

It has been only one year since headlines were made about this crowdfunding project – but what a year. Recently the team behind the Pebble Watch celebrated their incredible journey and the celebration was well earned.

Pebble “successfully” raised it funding goal of $100,000 on May 18th of 2012 – but the $100,000 was raised in just two hours. In 28 hours $1,000,000 had been pledged to the project.   Pebble then blew past that amount at warp speed- and when the dust settled a total amount of $10,266,845.00 had been raised.

Pebble Watch KickstarterThe crowdfunding campaign started on April 11th and ended with 68,289 contributors willing to support this concept of a smart watch.  The idea of wearable tech is accepted by all now – and Pebble played a role in bringing this concept to a wider audience.

Pebble reached rock star status in the crowdfunding world but it did something else. The incredible success brought the concept of crowdfunding to a wider audience.  There have been a few crowdfunding stories which have made it beyond the  realm of tech sites and news pure plays which have hit main stream media, but Pebble is at the top of the list – from concept to creation.  With each article of affirmation driven by Pebble’s odyssey,  crowdfunding established itself deeper into the lexicon of capital formation.  Now if we can just get equity crowdfunding out of the gates.

When Eric Migicovsky, founder of Pebble, was back at the University of Waterloo outside of Toronto only a few short years ago – the Pebble watch was a dream.  Now the watch is a reality.  As  tech darling Apple waddles forward subsisting on  the vapors of rumor regarding a watch, and the internet buzzes with the concept of wearable tech – the Pebble Watch is here.

The Kickstarter board for Pebble is still alive and very active. Updates are frequent and releases are moving forward.  Earlier this month Pebble announced they had received a round of funding from investors in the amount of $15 Million.  The additional funds, the deeply engaged supporter base created by their Kickstarter campaign, and an exciting concept have led to this enormous success.  One can only imagine what year two will bring to the Pebble team.
