Bears vs Babies, the hilarious card game created by the Exploding Kittens creators Elan Lee and Matthew Inman, is set to capture more than $3.1 million on funds from its Kickstarter campaign, which is set to close this evening.
The card game has one goal: for players to create monsters that go to war with babies. Players sit in a circle and draw cards. Each player picks two types of cards (bears and babies). Bears are to built and will include heads, torsos, arms, and legs. Babies are played immediately into the center of the table. They will form a baby army, which must be stopped by all players in the game. Players will go to war by provoking babies. If the monster is stronger than the babies, they will win that battle and eat those babies. If babies are strong than creatures, they will win and your army will be devoured.
Inman previously revealed he started working on the game a few years ago based on his comic, The Oatmeal. Readers connect heads, torsos, arms, and legs to create a variety of creatures based on characters from his comic. He added the original version of the game was doodled on paper cutouts, and had no real functioning game mechanic, except to “build funny-looking things.”
Lee recently shared why he and Inman decided to go with Kickstarter for their projects:
“We’re on Kickstarter because building a game with a community is the best way in the world to make a great game. We need our community to help us test out the final card distribution, tweak some of the rules, and tell us the best way to communicate the mechanics.”
The Bears vs Babies kid friendly core pack ($25) will have cards for 2-4 players while the core deck with NSFW expansion pack ($35) will contain a pack of extra-awful cards (obviously not kid friendly). Delivery for the game is set for June 2017. The campaign will close today at 9:00 p.m. EST.
