Hip Hop De La Soul Encourages Other Musicians to Use Crowdfunding Following Kickstarter Success (Video)

Despite what overly opinionated rocker Morrissey thinks, some artists actually enjoy using crowdfunding for their careers.

Earlier this week, The Smith’s former bandmate revealed his distaste for crowdfunding and how he finds the method to be “desperate” and “insulting to fans”:

Morrissey 2“It is a desperate measure, and insulting to your audience. We have already provided sufficient amounts of money. What is the next thing you’re going to ask?… [Touring is] the only option left [and] luckily [for] me [it] is very good and exciting. The only unpleasant part of this [is] that whenever a concert is cancelled the story captures attention; but if the concert took place, it would hardly be mentioned. Many people enjoy writing negative things about me. Which is fine with me. Let them go if it makes them happy.”

Fortunately, not all musicians find his remarks to really hit home (or matter), the hip hop group recently shared their thoughts about using Kickstarter for their upcoming album.

During a recent interview with VladTV, member David Jude Jolicoeur stated:

De La Soul 3“It’s not about being broke or anything like that, we’re not out here begging. We’re giving the opportunity for the fans who want to be involved in this record, fund this record and have us put it out. We’ve worked on this record for some time now. Of course, we’ve had to fund it ourselves to do some things. We’re not going to be on a Koch or a major record label, we don’t want to do that anymore, that’s slavery.”

Maceo Parker added:

De La Soul 1“Hopefully, what we’re doing and the success of what we’re doing it will definitely resonate with others and they’ll be able to do the same This is the new way of doing business, actually the labels are trying to figure out this system.”

With less than 4 hours until their crowdfunding campaign comes to an end, De La Soul has successfully captured nearly $600,000 from over 11,000 backers.
