How should journalism be financed in the future? — An idea from (the town of) Gießen is expanding

(Staff Translation)

Whether through foundations, crowdfunding or financial transaction systems such as flatter or kachingle, these all are models showing how journalism can be financed going forward.

Two years ago this was a topic of discussion at the local committee of the German Journalism Association (DJV) in Gießen. It has also been a theme during the Hessen DJV Branch meetings over the past two years.

Only the proposals coming out of the Gießen meetings did not go very far. Now, in 2012, during the federal DJV meeting in Kassel the topic became a top priority all of the sudden and will keep a soon to be formed work group busy…enough food for thought. Online Journalistic sites such as the Mittelhessenblog made up of generally only a handful of freelance journalists are counting on these alternate means of financing.
