The Veronica Mars film crowdfunding saga has been covered extensively in the press, including these pages. The incredible amount of funds, the high profile of the organizers and the glam of Hollywood have combined to create a compelling crowdfunding odyssey which has come to exemplify the potential of crowdfunding.
Veronica Mars closed a few short hours ago with an astounding total of $5,702,15. Total backers funding the project were 91,585. The initial goal was $2,000.000 – a mark which was easily surpassed by more than double that amount.
Most of the top tier “reward” packages were scooped up quickly by interested supporters. The top tier came in at a donation of $10,000. At this level the supporter gets a bit part in the film where you actually get to say a few words.
Film crowdfunding has been on the most talked about aspects of crowdfunding. Kickstarter is not the only platform that provides funding for films. There are niche sites which target specifically the film industry. The entire concept of crowdfunding may change the way film is finance forever – disrupting a long established path of producers, studio support and distributors.
In reviewing Kickstarter’s own data on film crowdfunding, this single film represents 1% of all funds raised to date on the Kickstarter platform which has hit$565 Million total dollars this past week. The $5.7 million also represents approximately 4.5% of all film and video funds raised (total dollars) on their platform.

made this effort an incredible success
