Poll: 78.6% of US Citizens Know of Bitcoin, 10.69% Believe it is Illegal to Own

This is kind of interesting. LendEdu is out with a survey about Bitcoin in the United States. The report surveyed 1000 Americans using online polling services by OnePoll. While it may skew more digitally native, still the results are worth a look.

So what did LendEdu uncover? Here are the numbers.

  • 78.60% of those surveyed are aware of Bitcoin. If you are aged 18 to 24, that number jumps to 86.67% – so pretty much everyone who is not stumbling through life. Those 55+ are still pretty aware at 75.93%
  • 41.6% believe it is not illegal to own Bitcoin (true). 47.71% are not quite certain and 10.69% believe it is against the law to own
  • 13.99% currently own Bitcoin and 17.18% expect to own it in the future. 28.24% are not certain whether they will or not own it – or simply do not want to say
  • 39.57% of those surveyed are open to using Bitcoin and 26.34% are pretty certain they will not
  • As one would expect, the youngs are more interested in investing (or speculating) in Bitcoin in contrast to the olds. Within the 18 to 24 age group, 38.46% are likely to invest in Bitcoin. That percentage tanks when you hit 55+ as just 3.08% would consider
  • 35.9% of the 18 to 24 group own, or previously owned, Bitcoin. Only 4.92% of the 55+ have owned it (27.38% are uncertain…)
  • Investing for the future: 48.89% of 18 to 24 group expect to invest as an asset for the future.
  • Men are more inclined to be involved with Bitcoin than women. 21.82% of men vs. 8.98% of women own, or have owned, Bitcoin
  • A good number of those surveyed are open to using Bitcoin for transactions. 45.66% of men and 27.22% of women would use it.

While Bitcoin is the best known cryptocurrency there are now many different types of digital coin. The market is still very young and there are plenty of questions regarding its future viability and legal status. China recently moved to undercut both ICOs and crypto-exchanges. There is a bill in the US Senate that may regulate crypto further. Regardless of where you stand, you cannot deny that the rapid rise of Bitcoin etc. has been an incredible phenomenon. Awareness and utilization of cryptocurrencies continue to grow. Can the Genie be put back in the bottle?
