Interesting crowdfunding story from SmartPlanet pertaining to Intellipaper. This was a project which was crowdfunded on Indiegogo and widely covered in the media.
What’s Intellipaper? Well it is a disposable USB drive made partially out of paper. Holding 8 to 32MB of data you just pull one off a sheet a paper, fold it in half and off you go. If the product is a bit longer not need to plug it in – they can use wireless technology to transfer data.
This sounds like a compelling project – yes? Unfortunately it was a total failure on Indiegogo. With a target of$300,000 – Intellipaper ONLY raised $6480.00. So it fell a bit short. This was in spite of the fact this crowdfunding project received tons of glowing press. The list is quite long: Engadget, UberGizmo, NBCNews some very prominent names in the media world.
So there is a happy end to this story though. The team at Intellipaper have since persevered and now have a signed a deal with a US Distributor to work on the product range.
Crowdfunding may not have provided the financing Intellipaper needed but more than likely this project generated the exposure necessary to find a partner which could provide the support to bring this unique product to market. Another question may be: Would this crowdfunding campaign been successful if they had offered equity to supporters?
