Superstar comedian Will Ferrell is the next big name celebrity using the Prizeo crowdfunding platform to raise funds for his favorite charity. Ferrell has launched a campaign to raise $100,000 for Cancer for College. Ferrell is listed as the “celebrity spokesman” for the organization.
Cancer for College was founded in 1993 by one of Ferrell’s best friends – Craig Pollard. Ferrell met Pollard when he was a pledge in college. Ferrell began supporting the charity prior to his becoming a household name after his success on Saturday Night Live and countless hit films.
Pollard is a two-time cancer survivor and double-amputee. When Craig was 19 he suffered a re-occurrence of cancer which altered his life. Craig experienced first hand the physical, emotional and financial devastation that cancer can have on a family. Following a life saving bone marrow transplant his life slowly resumed to a level of normalcy.
During Craig’s senior year at USC Business School he wrote the business plan for the charity which became Cancer for College. Families dealing with cancer often exhaust every last resource in the process of returning their child to health. This battle can leave nothing left for the survivor for things such as a college education. Cancer for College provides hope and inspiration to cancer survivors by granting college scholarships. Since inception, the charity has granted nearly $2 million in scholarships to more than one thousand survivors from around the country.
Donors have already contributed over $28,000 to the cause. Each contribution enters into a chance to join Ferrell a the Desert Showdown in Palm Springs, California on March 3-4, 2014. The winner will be able to take golfing lessons from Ferrell plus race golf carts, make sock puppets and enjoy a sensible lunch together with only the finest bottled water.
