Author George R.R. Martin Responds to Heartfelt Letter from Devoted Fan During Prizeo Campaign

A Song of Ice and Fire

It seems no matter what, it seems fans of the hit show “Game of Thrones” are wanting the author of the book series, George R.R. Martin, to kill them in his upcoming book “The Wind of Winter.” Even young devoted watchers.

George R.R. Martin

Last month, Martin launched a crowdfunding campaign on Prizeo earlier this week for support of the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot of Santa Fe. The initial campaign goal is $200,000. The campaign recently closed and the winner is expected to be announced later today.  The final total was over $502,000.

During the campaign, Martin announced two backers will be killed in his upcoming book if they contribute $20,000 or more. Within days of the launch, a Facebook employee and CEO of Meridian Health Plan David Cotton gave the funds and were selected.

A UK fan by the name of Jack sent a letter to the famed author asking him for the backer perk, despite not having the $20,000 to contribute to the cause.  The letter reads: “My dad showed me an article in The Times on the 9th of June about being a character in the ‘Game of Thrones’ and saving wolves. Wolves are my favorite animals and when I grow up I want to be a wolf conservationist. Although I’m not allowed to watch certain bits of ‘Game of Thrones’ I do enjoy playing ‘Skyrim’ and acting out being a warrior with my Bokken.”

Game of Thrones“I haven’t got $20,000 but I would be willing to donate my pocket money saving Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary. Maybe you have heard of the Wolf Conservation Trust near Reading in the UK, one of my favorite places. I would love to be considered as a character in your next book and thank you for reading my letter. A gruesome grizzly death is all I ask for.”

Jack also included £153 to go towards the Sanctuary.

Touched by the Jack’s kind words, Martin thanked him and wrote, “I’ve heard that you donated all your £153 pocket money saving to my Prizeo fundraiser on behalf of the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary. I cannot tell you how much that moved me. It pleases me no end to know that my novels, and the TV series based on them, have inspired readers as young as yourself to rally to the support of these majestic and too often stigmatized animals.”

“Alas, I cannot promise you a grisly dead in ‘THE WIND OF WINTER.’ Those spots have already been filled by some very generous donors, and there’s a limit to how many people even I can kill.

Game of Thrones 2“However, inspired by your example, my friends at Prizeo and I would love to follow your lead with a $10,000 in your name to the UK Wolf Conversation Trust. That’s a wonderful organization that I’ve heard much about, and they are lucky to count people like you as supporters.”

“I wish you the best of luck in your future career as a wolf conservationist, and hope that you inspire many others to follow your lead.”
