Brief: Coffee Alternative CogniTea Announces $600,000 Seed Round A Year After Indiegogo Success

Back in late January 2014, CogniTea, a Boston-based startup that produces all-natural tea, hit Indiegogo seeking only $5,000 for its growing business. The company ended up raised 250% of its initial goal, thanks to nearly 300 backers. Now its making a returning, this time seeking $600,000 in seed funding.

CogniTea 3CogniTea’s all-natural tea helps to promote mental clarity and focus. It is made with with a unique blend of teas, herbs, 100 mg of L-Theanine, which is an amino acid extracted from green tea that crosses the blood-brain barrier, increases GABA, and dopamine levels in the brain. It is specifically created to help consumers be alert and energized while also remaining focused and centered.

During a recent interview, founder of CogniTea, Alexander Kravets stated, “The past year has been about trying to figure out our target customer, and figuring out what people respond the best to.”

Alexander KravetsAccording Boston Business Journal, the targeted demographic includes entrepreneurs and creators; athletes, including yoga enthusiasts and runners; and people 50 or old who have trouble concentrating and have a sense of what Kravets calls “brain fog.”

The startup hopes that it can continue to find success by raising anywhere between $400,000 and $600,000 by mid-March. Kravets revealed the funds will be used to hire two full-time employees and to partner with more retailers.

Currently, CogniTea is sold at 10 local retailers in Boston, which include Cambridge Naturals and Pemberton farms.
