Humans of New York Seeks $1M on Generosity to Fight Pediatric Cancer

On Thursday, Humans of New York launched its 8th crowdfunding initiative through Indiegogo’s Generosity platform to raise $1 million for pediatric cancer research. The nonprofit organization teamed up with the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for this new project.

Sharing details about the project, Humans of New York’s creator, Brandon Stanton, stated:

Brandon Stanton“Dr. Richard O’Reilly has been the Chairman of Pediatrics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for over thirty years.  He’s a leading expert on bone marrow transplants and pioneered an approach that is now used to treat over 2,500 patients annually.  In his position as chairman, he has helped lead a team of the world’s best doctors, nurses, and researchers in their battle to save lives.  As one oncologist told me: ‘Dr. O’Reilly has never been able to distance himself from the outcome.  He thinks we’ve failed if we don’t save every single kid.’  So let’s help him save every single kid.  Dr. O’Reilly is stepping down this year, and in honor of his service, we are raising to aid in the fight against pediatric cancer.”

Stanton revealed that two-thirds of the campaign’s funds will go towards the research at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The remaining third will be used for psychologically and socially support to the young patients and families as they endure the long, tough battle against the illness. This will include non-medical services such as therapy and travel subsidies.

Stanton added:

Dr. Richard O’Reilly“Funding is scarce for pediatric cancer.  Because cancer most often occurs in older populations, pharmaceutical companies are not incentivized to develop treatments for cancers that develop during childhood.  Therefore, nearly all funding for the research of pediatric cancer comes from private donations.  Please consider donating, and let’s help empower Dr. O’Reilly and the team at Memorial Sloan Kettering as they work to end pediatric cancer.  We’ve created donation levels that are appropriately themed for the battle.”

Since its launch, the campaign has successfully secured over $250,000 from 7500 supporters.
