On Indiegogo: Diners, Drive-Ins And Dives Alum Krazy Jim’s Blimpyburger Seeks New Location

Krazy Jim’s Blimpyburger has been a staple in Ann Arbor, Michigan for decades. The burger joint has been feeding students at the University of Michigan since 1953. Current owners Rich and Chris Magner met while working at the restaurant in the 1970’s. It was even featured on Guy Fieri’s Food Network television show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. Blimpyburger also made a USA Today list of ten great regional fast food locations.

I’ve had the pleasure of dining at this proud hole-in-the-wall restaurant. It’s a very unique experience that requires some knowledge of how to order your food. If you don’t do it right you’re liable to get chastised, but it’s all part of the fun. Regardless, the burgers are amazing. It’s fast food heaven.

So, you could imagine the heartbreak caused when the restaurant was forced to close its doors in July of this year. The University bought the property for a new construction project, and unfortunately Blimpyburger didn’t own the land. They were displaced tenants.

The location we operated out of for so long helped make Blimpyburger unique.  Replicating the ‘Blimpy experience’- standing at the counter while your custom-made burger is cooked before your eyes- is of utmost importance to us as we design the new location.  We have a great location picked out; we have drawn up plans that will allow you the full Blimpy experience, with maybe just a little more elbow room.  We are using the original stools, tables, and other familiar Blimpy fixtures that will have you feeling at home in our new place.  The Snow Bears like the new spot as well and they hope to see you this winter.

The restaurant is looking for help to move to a new location with the same charm as the old location, and they have launched an Indiegogo campaign seeking $60,000 to help in that effort. The money will be used to secure a bank loan. The restaurant is also looking for investors to help with the move, which they estimate will cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000.

At the time of writing the campaign has raised just short of $6,000 in three days. It ends on January 25, 2014.
