Clayton and Maplewood businesses have discovered crowdfunding—fundraising that utilizes public support rather than traditional investors—and are making it work to their advantage.
The tactic is generally used by artists and community groups to raise funds for new projects. This month fans of the canceled show Veronica Mars raised $2 million toward shooting a new movie in just one day. Local businesses are aiming lower financially, but their efforts are just as varied as the businesses participating:
- ·Katie’s Pizzeria owner Katie Lee, who’s earned nods for best pizza from Sauce Magazine four of her five years in business, successfully generated $40,000 to open a second space in Rock Hill;
