Described as the “the definitive list of the United Kingdom’s 100 most exciting and innovative new companies launched in the last three years.” The Startups 100 is a prominent group of young companies that are viewed having great potential for their innovative ways. Crowdcube is part of the list but in a sign of becoming an established company they have reached an age where they will be recognized as a startup no longer.
Some interesting facts about the companies on the list include:
- A third of the businesses have female co-founders
- The average turnover was £973,543
- The youngest entrepreneur is 21-year-old Oliver Murphy of Reviveaphone
- The oldest is 66-year-old Martin Freeman of Bath-based PropertECO
- 13 businesses already generate annual revenues of more than £2m
- Around 1,300 are employed
- 36 companies were started outside London, with four each in Scotland and Wales
The five companies that have leveraged the Crowdcube equity crowdfunding platform are:
BerryWhite: manufactures, markets and sells non-carbonated organic fruit drinks. BerryWhite organic drinks, already sold in 27 countries, has just confirmed that they are now due to be sold in 50 Waitrose stores around the UK.
BeerBods: subscription service was launched in September 2012. We send our subscribers 12 beers in the post every 12 weeks and charge them £36. Our subscribers drink the same beer (just one) every week and come together to talk about it online.
LOVESPACE : the latest venture from Brett Akker, co-founder of Streetcar, which was sold to US car club competitor ZipCar for £32m in 2010. LOVESPACE, which was named one of the UK’s top-50 most disruptive companies and has been featured on the BBC, is the first storage-by-the-box company in the UK and is helping customers ‘live a bigger life, one box at a time’.
