Brief: FirstBuild’s Opal Nugget Ice Maker Enters Testing Phase; Still On Track for July 2016 Delivery

Opal 3Last week, GE’s FirstBuild announced that its Indiegogo funded project, Opal Nugget Ice Maker, has entered the testing phase of its production. Last summer, the company launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $150,000 for the product. The project quickly surpassed its initial goal and crossed the $1.3 million threshold within days of its crowdfunding debut. By the end of its campaign, the ice maker successfully secured $2,771,463.

Opal 2Opal is an affordable countertop nugget ice maker designed by the FirstBuild community and priced well below other currently available ice making appliance. The ice maker works by packing together small ice crystals, creating nuggets of soft yet crunchy ice in 15 minutes. Nugget ice chills beverages faster than conventional ice cubes. The air pockets in each nugget also absorb the flavor of the drink while cooling, leaving a chewable and tasty refreshment for those who enjoy snacking on ice after they have finished their drink.

During a recent update, the FirstBuild team revealed:

“Exciting news: Opal production tooling is complete, and we are entering next phase: testing. Initial testing shows us meeting our goals for ice rate and ice bucket capacity. The test phase will likely last 6-8 weeks as we run machines through their paces.”

The company then added that it still on track for July 2016 delivery.
