Move Over Google Glass: meta 1 Turns Augmented Reality To 11

We’ve written numerous times about the Oculus Rift, a product by Oculus VR that gives video gamers a full virtual reality experience. Now a product called the meta 1 aims to bring virtual reality to our everyday world, and it’s crowdfunding now on Kickstarter.

As with many hardware products on crowdfunding sites, this VR headset has been in the works for a long time even though it is just coming up for air publicly. Development started about two years ago, but the team feels the product is finally to a stage where it is ready for Kickstarter. The public seems to agree. The product is certain to be fully funded.

The lifeblood of this project’s future will obviously be the developers that pick up a set of these glasses and begin to riff on them. Their pitch video outlines a few of the potential uses. In general, the true power of the device lies in reading and reacting to gesture-based controls from users, allowing the user to interact with and change the virtual reality he or she is seeing at the time. It’s rather incredible.

It takes the theory behind Google Glass and turns it on it’s head. Instead of the technology getting out of the way, it becomes fully submersing. Seriously, just watch the pitch video. There are a few moments in there that really go a long way at displaying the potential of the product going forward.

Note that the campaign itself gives a nod to the meta 1 being geared specifically for developers. This presale is aimed at getting the product in the hands of developers so that they can begin to make the software that will support a sleeker consumer version down the line. Consumers may want to hold off for version 2 or 3.
