The Spinpod Promises Perfect Panoramic Smartphone Photos

Two PhD candidates from UCLA have a campaign on Kickstarter seeking $75,000 to bring the Spinpod to market. The Spinpod promises to help users capture high-quality panoramic images and time-lapse video easily with their smartphones and full cameras.

“Our goal was to develop a device that was intuitive to use and affordable on almost any budget. Due to its small size and durability it can easily be taken everywhere including camping, hiking, to parties, or the beach.”

The product is patent-pending and includes a built-in rechargeable battery that should net over 10 hours of battery life for any use. The unit works by acting as a mount for smartphones and cameras. The internal motor slowly spins the device allowing for smooth panoramic photos.

Perhaps the coolest use is in capturing time-lapse motion video, a decidedly professional-looking technique that can be hard to replicate with a simple smartphone. With the Spinpod it looks quite easy…

You can also use a camera to take motion time-lapse videos with the Spinpod. Many cameras, like the GoPro, have built in time-lapse modes which take pictures at defined time intervals. You can also use an intervalometer to externally trigger your camera and generate time-lapse recordings.

The Spinpod can be preordered now for $59. $74 nets a Spinpod and the available landscape camera mount.
