The high profile Singapore based crowdfunding campaign for the 3D printer for everyone, labeled “Bucaneer”, closed today. Starting with an original goal of “only” $100,000.00 the team at Pirate3D blew past that amount to raise an incredible $1,438.765 from 3520 backers. Pledge levels started at just $7.00 and went up to $9,997 with a single supporter backing at that level. The majority of contributors supported the $397 level which included one of the Bucaneer printers which is scheduled to be delivered in February 2014.
The organizers posted a letter to supporters just prior to the end of the campaign which addressed the steps following the successful campaign. The missive acknowledged their incredible achievement,

The organizers continued to affirm their goal of shipping to supporters by February with some supporters expected to receive their printers by December of this year.
As with most successful, product based crowdfunding campaigns the euphoria of success is followed by the reality of the intrinsic challenges in delivering their product to supporters from around the world.
3D printers have been in vogue of late. The Buccanneer hardware is an elegantly designed device that is targeting the retail market with an affordable price tag. Supporters who are to receive the 3D printer will probably receive it at a price level far lower than the masses can expect once wide distribution makes it available to the masses.
