Last month, San Diego-based OSSIC Corporation launched a Kickstarter initiative to raise $100,000 for its self-titled 3D audio headphones. Within 2.5 hours, the project exceeded its initial goal and 12 days after its debut secured over $1 million.

OSSIC 5The OSSIC X supposedly calibrates to the individual listener’s head and ear features, increasing overall sound quality and ensuring the most accurate sound placement, making for a listening experience that’s ten times more immersive than current technologies.

Explaining details about its head-related transfer function (HRTF), the company stated:

“How we hear the world is not a one-size-fits all situation. It’s our physical anatomy that plays a critical role in defining how sound enters our ears.”

OSSIC’s HRTF is based on:

  • The position in space
  • The size of the head
  • The shape of the ears

Also noting how the headphones work, the company revealed:

“The OSSIC calibration process starts as soon as you put the headphones on. The data is instantly paired with our smart algorithms to determine accurate sound playback based on your anatomy and position. No laboratories required.”

Jason Riggs, CEO of OSSIC, stated:

OSSIC 3“There is a large gap between what is possible with 3D audio and what is available to consumers. We are excited to bring the OSSIC X to listeners, and to let them hear what they have been missing, the 10x audio experience.”

In addition to their recent funding success, OSSIC  announced it will be joining the Abbey Road Red incubator program for music technology. Backers can now receive the headphones for $249 and the expected delivery is December 2016. The Kickstarter is set to close on April 21st.
